Up My Nose

By popular request, here is the story about the berry I stuck up my nose.

First a disclaimer- there is only one part of this story I clearly remember, the rest is from the fuzzy haze from the perspective of a three year old and what I was told by my mother.

I was outside in the backyard with my older, wiser brother who was probably 5 at the time.  I remember the bushes out there, lush and green with greener berries growing in tiny clusters all over.  My brother told me to put a berry in my nose.  This, at least, is my recollection.  His may well be that I come up with the idea myself.  The truth is lost in the past somewhere, much like a lot of truth gets lost.

So I pushed a berry up into my nose, as three year old logic dictated I should, then promptly got upset because there was a berry up my nose.  My brother and I went inside to tell my mother about my dilemma.  She took a look and told me to blow it out.  She demonstrated saying  “Blow like this, Nicole.”

I nodded, eager to please and did my best, but instead of exhaling, I inhaled as hard as I could and that little green berry shot straight up into my nasal cavity.

The next thing that I remember is the only part of the story that I remember very clearly.  I was lying on the doctor’s exam table, being told to hold still as he stuck something very long and very sharp up my nostril to retrieve that berry.  I will never forget that.

Now comes the blog post where I sum it all up, make a bigger point to the story, and offer wisdom.  But really, there is no bigger point to the story, except that I highly recommend that you NOT shove a berry up your nose. Sometimes a story is just a story.
