This summer I got to participate in a lot of ministry. But if I only ‘did’ ministry and didn’t listen and learn, then I would be doing it wrong. In this series, ‘Summer School’ I present some of the lessons God taught me.
Summer School Lesson 5, the Last, Best Lesson: That My Joy May Be In You
At the end, this has been an amazing summer for me. It has been filled with doing God’s work, and being the benefactor of His lessons. I have been able to see and do amazing things.
Her daddy spoke, telling her that we named her Emily Joy for the joy that we feel when we know Christ. He read this scripture for her:
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. John 15:9-12
I just stood quiet and smiling, tissue in hand. Several people commented about that later, that I hadn’t said anything when I am the speaker in the family. Two reasons, one practical and one accurate. First, I told Rusty he was in charge because I would be too choked up to talk! I was right. It was very emotional for me- still is.
But more importantly, I knew that that day was about Emily and God. As I told her, it was not the Mama show or the Daddy show, or even the Pastor Steve show. It was the Emily and God show. It was all about them. Sometimes being quiet is the best way to speak.
This has been an outstanding summer. There is so much more that I got to witness, so many more lessons that I learned from Him- many more than I have recorded here. I am reminded of John said at the end of his gospel: Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
I am not uniquely chosen by God to receive His lessons. They are there for the seeing for all of us. I am praying that they would be made obvious for you, too.
